Voice Over Instructions

We use voice over on several different types of communications and training modules.
Here are some tips to make creating and using the audio tracks easier.

Equipment-

  • The team has two Blue Yeti microphones and portable sound booth sets.
  • The Mics should be plug and play. If your computer does not recognize the microphone or headphones you may have plugged into the mic, restart your computer while they are plugged in, and it will often detect them.

Scripts-

  • Script elements may be divided by numbers or bullet points. Each of those pieces should be a separate recording.

Recording-

  • When setting up to record, it is often helpful to reserve a room where you can close the door to isolate you from some of the office ambient noise.
  • Put the portable sound booth on a desk or table with the mic inside the box and speak into the box.
  • Having your script printed off may be helpful so you can lay it on the desk or inside the box as you read.
  • It is often most straightforward to use “Audacity,” a free-to-download audio program.
  • Start a new Audacity project, click the record button, and speak into the mic. Click the stop button to stop recording.
  • Make sure to do a playback to ensure that you are recording and it sounds like you want.
  • Once you make a recording, you will need to export the file as an MP3 or WAV.
  • Name each file with a number and then a consistent name for the project. (1projectname.mp3, 2projectname.mp3, etc) so they will be easy to match to the script and add to the final project.
  • Listen to your recordings to make sure you got what you wanted and didn’t cough or stumble in the delivery. Leave about 1 second on the front and back of each recording. Trim any excess.
  • Take each file and run it through Adobe Podcast Audio Enhancer to clear up the sound and eliminate background noise. (https://podcast.adobe.com/enhance#)
  • Put all your final files into a folder (ProjectNameEnhancedAudio)and put the folder in BOX.
  • Share the link to the folder.
  • Make sure to replace the microphone and recording booth.
